Mel joined the Young Carer Team as a volunteer nearly 6 years ago and has never looked back! She has been integral in many of our activities, from sharing her cooking skills with our young carers group on a Thursday evening through to working with our young carers forum to promote the rights of young carers in Swindon.

Mel’s favorite volunteering memories are the times she has given up her weekend to attend the national Young Carers festival. “Seeing the young people with complete freedom to be themselves for a weekend with over 1,300 other young carers, enjoying adventure activities, bands, fairground rides, art activities and a chance to have their say about their caring role, is just amazing”.

“I chose to volunteer with Swindon Carers Centre as I really wanted to work with young people and it provides lots of different opportunities to interact with different age groups in a variety of different situations. You could be helping run a regular evening group, taking a group to the theatre, horse riding, indoor skydiving or taking a group to the Young Carers festival for the weekend. You can chose how much time you’re able to commit and how many activities you get involved in, so it’s really easy to fit it in with the other things going on in your life.”
