Safeguarding children, young people, and adults at risk is everyone’s responsibility, not just professionals. If you have concerns about a child, young person, or adult, it's vital to report them as soon as possible to ensure their safety.

Safeguarding children and young people

If there is no immediate danger but you are concerned about a child’s welfare and need advice, you can contact Children and Families Contact Swindon.

Call 01793 464646 during office hours: Monday to Thursday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm and Friday from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.

Alternatively, you can email them at contactchildrenandfamilies@swindon.gov.uk.

The Emergency Duty Service (EDS) is available outside of office hours on  01793 436699.

If a child is in immediate danger, you should telephone the police by dialling 999.

Safeguarding adults

If there is no immediate danger but you are concerned about an adult's welfare and need advice, you can contact The Safeguarding Team.

Call 01793 463555 during office hours: Monday to Thursday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm and Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

Alternatively, you can email them at: adultsafeguarding@swindon.gov.uk

Please contact The Emergency Duty Service (EDS) to report safeguarding concerns that require urgent action outside of normal working hours on 01793 436699.

What is child abuse?

Child abuse occurs when a child is harmed, whether through physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, or neglect. Children who experience abuse often find it difficult to speak out, making it essential for anyone working with children or young people to recognise the signs.

What safeguarding duties apply to adults?
    • Adults with care and support needs, regardless of whether these needs are being met by a local authority.
    • Adults who are experiencing, or at risk of, abuse or neglect and, due to their care and support needs, are unable to protect themselves from the abuse, neglect, or the risk of it.
How many types of abuse are there?

There are 10 types of abuse which are: Physical, Financial, Sexual, Psychological or Emotional, Discriminatory, Domestic, Modern Slavery, Self-Neglect, Neglect or Acts of Omission and Organisational Abuse
