Young carers

Young carers carry responsibilities far beyond their years, often sacrificing their childhood and missing out on the carefree moments of youth. At Swindon Carers Centre, we recognise the unique challenges young carers face and are dedicated to offering the support they need to succeed.

Honouring and empowering young carers

Caring for a loved one can be emotionally and physically overwhelming for a young carer - impacting their education, social life, and overall well-being during key developmental years. Our team is here to support young carers by providing respite from their caring responsibilities, encouraging them to prioritise their well-being, and connecting them with community services. We aim to create space for their personal growth, enjoyment and future aspirations.

Our approach

Our compassionate team takes the time to listen and understand each carer’s unique situation, offering a safe and welcoming space to decompress, share their experiences, and access opportunities for personal growth and enjoyment.

Our approach involves a clear, supportive process:

    • Register with Our Service: Complete our referral form to begin your journey with us.
    • Young Carer Assessment (YCA): We take the time to understand your needs, priorities, and expectations from our service.
    • Service Offering: Receive a personalised overview of the support available, including signposting to relevant services, and access to our activities, groups and external resources.
    • Review: Young Carers are offered an annual review of their caring role.
    • Join Our Community: Young Carers who are currently registered with us and continue to be carers will receive invitations to our groups and activities, and have access to support and advice from the young carer team. This will continue unless they choose to leave the program or are no longer a carer.
    • Post-17: If a Young Carer continues in their role until they are 17, they are offered a transition process with the Swindon Carers Centre team to switch to Adult Carer support when they are 18.

Do you provide support for young carers with their own needs?

We endeavour to be as inclusive as possible, a young carer does need to be independent in activities and groups as our service is unable to provide 1:1 support.

Swindon Carers Centre helped me to become ready to make the transition from a young carer into a young adult carer.
