Swindon Carers Centre (SCC) is supporting this year’s Young Carers Awareness Day on Thursday 25 January 2018. It is a national day of recognition for the UK’s 700,000 young carers. Swindon Carers Centre is currently supporting over 900 young carers from the age of 5 years old in their caring role.

To celebrate Young Carers Awareness Day, 14 schools across Swindon are holding a non-uniform day and a further 9 schools are organising fun activities, all with the aim of raising awareness. The day will see thousands of students and staff in Swindon coming together to raise awareness of young carers nationally and locally. This is the first-time schools in Swindon have collaborated to hold co-ordinated young carer awareness activities.

Big Lottery Funded SCC Schools Development Officer Ann Giles, says: “It is fantastic to see schools across Swindon motivated to support and raise the profile of young carers. They are going out of their way to organise activities to show how important and valued young carers are and how many other children are just like them and have a caring role. It also lets children without a caring role appreciate what a young carer does and how they could support them.”
