Unpaid carers play a vital role in supporting older and disabled people, and with flu circulating earlier than usual this year, health leaders are urging all unpaid carers to come forward for their free NHS flu vaccination.
Flu can cause serious illness, and when a carer becomes unwell, the person they look after may be left without essential support. Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect both yourself and the person you care for during the busy winter period.
Who counts as an unpaid carer for the free flu vaccine?
You are eligible for a free NHS flu jab if you:
- Receive Carer’s Allowance, or
- Are the main carer for an older or disabled person whose wellbeing would be at risk if you became ill
You do not need formal documentation. You can simply self-declare your caring role when booking or attending your appointment.
