Making a Difference: Being a Trustee at Swindon Carers Centre

"I like being involved with a charity that is benefitting thousands of people locally"

Neil Steptoe has been a Trustee with Swindon Carers Centre since 2021 and here he talks about the role and his motivation for getting involved with our charity.

What interested you about the role and the work of Swindon Carers Centre?

In my previous role before retirement I represented the company I worked for, TE Connectivity, as their Ambassador for the Swindon site. This involved corporate responsibility with the challenge of enhancing how TE worked with the local community and to help support areas that would benefit both the people and the environment.

As part of this role we worked with many local charities, one of them being Swindon Carers Centre. The work SCC does on behalf of carers fitted well with how the company wanted to be involved in supporting local people to enhance their wellbeing.

What do you do as a Trustee?

In my role as a Trustee I, along with fellow Trustees, ensure that SCC is being run in line with its governing documents/policies. This involves being up to date and involved in what is going on within the charity across all departments. I also attend meetings, some activity events and offering support where practicable.

How much time do you give?

This varies depending on regular meetings and any ad-hoc meeting or training requirements, but typically it would be between four and eight hours a month.

What do you enjoy about being a Trustee and how does it make you feel?

I enjoy being involved with a charity where I can feel part of a great team that is benefitting thousands of people within the local community. I also like to give some of my time in supporting carers locally in the Swindon area.

Thank you to Neil and all our Trustees for giving their time, expertise and dedication and making a difference to the lives of unpaid carers in Swindon.
